Recovered Deleted Text Messages - A 16-year-old boy had been charged with sexual assault. Law enforcement had examined the defendant’s cell phone and had been unable to recover any deleted text messages. Our lab was able to recover several deleted text messages that showed that the victim had actually offered to perform the sexual act in question. After being confronted with this exculpatory evidence, the victim admitted she had lied. The District Attorney dropped all charges!

Possession of Child Pornography Investigation - A client had been charged with Possession of Child Pornography on his home computer. A review of his hard drive at the State Crime Lab revealed that there were three valid contraband images on the computer; however, the location of these images and the manner in which they were placed on the computer showed the defendant did not knowingly download these files. The defendant used a peer-to-peer program to download episodes of the TV show Friends and these three images were found inside a zip file also labeled “Friends.” We were able to show a search for the word “Friends” and the time the zip file was downloaded and opened, to show the zip file was immediately deleted after it was opened the first time. This evidence showed that the defendant had no intent to possess the Child Pornography images and the court dismissed the charge!

Search Warrant and Investigative Report Review - One of the services we provide for our Criminal Defense clients is a complete review of all paperwork for the case including any search warrants, reports, and indictments. Lab Director, Neil Broom, is a former law enforcement officer with over 25 years of experience in the legal and security industry. In a recent case, we were able to deduce that the officers involved in serving a search warrant exceeded the scope of their authority while searching for evidence of an Internet based computer crime. As a result, all charges against our client were dismissed!

Cell Tower Mapping Forensics - Four defendants were charged with Armed Robbery. We have the expertise to analyze Call Detail Records (CDRs) and Historic Cell Site Location Information provided by the cellular service providers (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon). We can perform Cell Site Analysis and geolocation mapping of cell phone use. For our client, we conducted a review of her Call Detail Records. Our review showed her phone had not been in the same areas as the other three defendants on the day in question. Additionally, we were able to show that our client’s phone was active miles away on the other side of Los Angeles at the time of the crime. Lastly, we compared six months of call records from all four defendants to show our client had not even been in communication with the other defendants using her cell phone.
